Content Usage Terms

All rights and licenses to use ACLED’s Content are conditioned on the user’s adherence to the End User Licensing Agreement, which incorporates these Content Usage Terms and ACLED’s Attribution Policy (collectively, the “Terms & Conditions”). ACLED reserves the right to update the Terms & Conditions at any time, and to restrict or revoke access from any user who violates any such terms. In the case of repeated breaches, we may also restrict or revoke access from the organization you represent. ACLED will change the “Last Updated” date to indicate that the terms have been updated.
All users [MUST/are REQUIRED TO]:

Use ACLED data, analysis, and platforms responsibly and in good faith.

Ensure accurate and faithful representation of ACLED’s data, analysis, and methodology based on the Codebook and other publicly available resources.

In the case of any uncertainty about ACLED’s data, analysis, or methodology, or receipt of any claim that the data, analysis, or methodology have been misrepresented, contact the ACLED team directly ([email protected]) to confirm accurate understandings.

Promptly correct any inaccuracies identified.

Clearly articulate and present how you have manipulated the data for your research, analysis, or use.
Users are PROHIBITED from using ACLED’s data, analysis, or platforms:

In any manner that may harm, target, oppress, disparage, or defame any other person or group, or cause them to be harmed, targeted, oppressed, disparaged, or defamed.

To disparage ACLED, or in any manner that may harm ACLED’s reputation or goodwill.

To create or develop any dataset, product, or platform that competes with, or creates a functional substitute for, any of ACLED’s content, products, or platforms.

To provide services to or for any other person, entity, or organization without authorization.

To create, develop, support, or provide benchmarking for any dataset, product, or platform that is similar to, in competition with, or creates a functional substitute for any of ACLED’s content, products, or platforms.

To attribute any of your analysis or manipulation of ACLED’s data to ACLED.

In any manner that infringes the intellectual property rights, privacy rights, rights of publicity, or other rights of any person, entity, or organization.

In any manner that violates any law, regulation, or order or ruling of any judicial or regulatory body.

To train, test, develop, or improve any machine learning (ML) models, large language models (LLMs), artificial intelligence (AI) systems, or similar technologies in any way that creates a substitute for ACLED, allows access to ACLED data, or violates our Terms & Conditions in any other way. This restriction applies regardless of whether such use is commercial, academic, or experimental in nature. Use of ACLED Content with AI/ML/LLM systems is subject to strict limitations. Full terms are detailed in the End User License Agreement.

In any manner that subjects ACLED to liability.
These terms are intended to encourage the legitimate academic inquiry and use of the data or analysis. ACLED encourages engagement with the academic community and welcomes constructive feedback that can help improve our data, analysis, and methodology.
ACLED is required to monitor and address irresponsible or bad-faith use of our data, analysis, or platforms as part of our do-no-harm and conflict sensitivity policies.
The interpretation of these Content Usage Terms, and determination regarding your compliance, will be in ACLED’s sole discretion. ACLED’s decisions are final and binding.
