Hangyu Lee on Thailand’s nationalist election shift
ACLED’s East Asia Pacific Research Manager Hangyu Lee comments on how the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict reshaped Thailand's 2026 election.
ACLED's East Asia Pacific Researcher Hangyu Lee, said:
“Thailand’s 2026 election marked a decisive shift in the country’s political trajectory. Bhumjaithai secured around 193 seats out of 500 as of now, the first time in years that a conservative, openly pro-military party campaigning on nationalism, patriotism, and deference to the monarchy has won so convincingly at the ballot box.
The Cambodia–Thailand border conflict was not simply a backdrop to this vote; it fundamentally reshaped the electoral landscape. The escalation generated a surge in nationalist sentiment that directly benefited pro-military actors, particularly Bhumjaithai, which positioned itself as the most hawkish defender of Thai sovereignty. In that climate, criticizing the military or questioning the government’s handling of the conflict became politically costly.
At the same time, anti-government protest activity, which had been a defining feature of Thai politics since 2020, declined sharply. The nationalist environment narrowed political space and weakened progressive forces. The People’s Party, successor to the dissolved Move Forward Party, entered the race leading in early polling but ultimately secured only around 115 seats, a significant underperformance widely linked to the impact of the border crisis on voter sentiment.
Crucially, Bhumjaithai’s victory may create incentives to sustain, rather than fully resolve, border tensions. Having mobilized voters around a platform centered on defending sovereignty, the party now derives political legitimacy from that posture, raising questions about how quickly de-escalation with Cambodia is likely to occur.”
