Ladd Serwat, Africa Senior Analyst at ACLED, said:

“The mass abduction of more than 300 civilians — including women and children — by Islamist militants in Nigeria’s Borno state last Friday is a stark reminder of the chronic insecurity in the country’s northeast region. While Islamist groups such as Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, the Mahmuda group, and the Islamic State Sahel Province have gained increased attention due to increasing operations within the northeastern areas of Nigeria, the vast majority of Islamist violence in the country remains concentrated in Borno state.

The attack in Ngoshe comes amid a broader pattern of kidnapping numerous victims simultaneously and militant operations targeting schools. Mass abductions have become a frequent tool of violence, coercion, and revenue generation.”
