Muaz Al Abdullah on attacks targeting US-linked sites in Iraq
ACLED’s Middle East Research Manager Muaz Al Abdullah comments on Iran’s war battlefield in Iraq as attacks increase
Iraq is rapidly consolidating its position as a central front in the widening regional confrontation, with a sharp uptick in attacks targeting US-linked sites and critical infrastructure across the country.
Muaz Al Abdullah, Middle East Research Manager at ACLED, said:
“A drone attack targeting the US consulate in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, was intercepted on Monday without casualties or damage. Hours later, two blasts were heard near Erbil's airport, underscoring the sustained operational tempo by Iran and its militias.
“In March alone, ACLED records more than 80 drone strike and shelling events carried out by different pro-Iranian militias. These militias have concentrated their attacks on US diplomatic and military targets, with over 20 events striking US-linked facilities across the country.
“In response, the US has carried out 89 airstrikes against Popular Mobilization Forces positions, including Kataib Hezbollah and the Badr Organization — groups that are formally integrated into the Iraqi military but operate with significant autonomy. This suggests Washington perceives a direct operational link between these factions and those claiming responsibility for the attacks, placing increasing strain on the Iraqi government at a time of domestic political uncertainty.”
