NAIROBI — Gunfire and explosions ripped through the eastern city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday as the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group clashed with government forces. The fight for control of Goma, the capital of the country’s long-embattled, mineral-rich North Kivu province, threatens the city’s 2 million people and risks a wider conflagration that could pull in armies from across the region.
