Drawing on new data produced by ACLED and the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, Diana Palmer — a councilmember in Glens Falls, New York, and a part-time lecturer at Northeastern University — and Timothy Zick — a professor of law at William & Mary Law School — argue that firearms are having chilling effect on the exercise of the First Amendment right to peaceful protest, in the United States, noting that the “data fill a void in ongoing debates about the compatibility of free speech and firearms at protest events.”
