Safety and Risk Mitigation Organization
SRMO was established in 2013 to respond to the growing threats and attacks against Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in Afghanistan. Its mandate is to provide protection to grassroots HRDs to enable them to continue their crucial work. SRMO provides capacity building (including through training in safety and risk mitigation, digital security and stress management), facilitates emergency relocation and conducts advocacy demanding better protection mechanisms for HRDs both inside Afghanistan and in exile. As part of its advocacy work, SRMO conducts monitoring, documentation and reporting of abuses targeting HRDs, local media and other members of civil society. SRMO only includes incidents in its database once they have been verified via SRMO’s civil society network inside Afghanistan.
