Gio Maciel

South America Researcher

Gio is a South America Researcher at ACLED and has been with the organisation since May 2023. He focuses on armed conflict dynamics for the Ecuador Gang Expansion Project, having previously contributed to research on Brazil and Chile. With over 15 years of experience in human rights and international fieldwork across the Americas, Europe, and West Africa, his work specialises in drug trafficking routes and the alliances between cartels and local gangs. Prior to joining ACLED, he held roles in research, reporting, and humanitarian development, often covering active conflict zones in Spanish, Portuguese, French and English, embedded with military units under the UN system and state forces. Gio holds a Master’s degree in Anthropology from Concordia University and a Bachelor’s in Journalism, and is based in Montreal, Canada.
