Data update: Correction of “Violent Demonstration” Events in Northern and Western Africa

New corrections published for 'Violent Demonstration' events in Northern and Western Africa

On 8 September 2025, ACLED completed a review of ‘Violent demonstration’ events in its Northern and Western Africa datasets to enhance data accuracy. These data corrections are part of a larger initiative to improve ACLED’s ‘Violent demonstration’ event data

A total of 5,924 events were reviewed as part of this project. Of these, 889 events (15% of total ‘Violent demonstration’ events in this region) were corrected to other Sub-event types.

Key Changes

Correction period and scope: 1 January 2018 - Present for Northern and Western Africa data

Total number of events corrected: 516

Details of corrections:

  • 690 events corrected from ‘Violent demonstration’ to ‘Peaceful protest’
  • 173 events corrected from ‘Violent demonstration’ to ‘Protest with intervention’
  • 26 events corrected from ‘Violent demonstration to ‘Excessive force against protesters’
