Data update: Correction of “Violent Demonstration” Events in Southern and East Africa

New corrections published for 'Violent Demonstration' events in Southern and East Africa

On 2 September 2025, ACLED completed a review of ‘Violent demonstration’ events in its Southern and East Africa datasets to enhance data accuracy. These data corrections are part of a larger initiative to improve ACLED’s ‘Violent demonstration’ event data

A total of 6,668 events were reviewed as part of this project. Of these, 516 events (8% of total ‘Violent demonstration’ events in this region) were corrected to other Sub-event types.

Correction period and scope: 1 January 2018 - Present for Southern and East Africa data

Total number of events corrected: 516

Details of corrections:

  • 395 events corrected from ‘Violent demonstration’ to ‘Peaceful protest’
  • 107 events corrected from ‘Violent demonstration’ to ‘Protest with intervention’
  • 12 events corrected from ‘Violent demonstration to ‘Excessive force against protesters’
