Data update: Improved source coverage for the state of Chiapas in ACLED’s Mexico dataset
Data from El Heraldo de Chiapas improves ACLED’s coverage of Chiapas, Mexico from October 2024 to present
On 15 June 2026, ACLED published new data from El Heraldo de Chiapas, improving coverage of the state of Chiapas, Mexico. This update covers events from 1 October 2024 through May 2026. Since then, data from this source have been incorporated into ACLED’s real-time coverage of Mexico. This source fills a gap from a previous source, Diario Contra Poder en Chiapas, which stopped reporting.
Analytical note: El Heraldo de Chiapas reports political violence events at a higher rate than Diario Contra Poder en Chiapas, the source it replaces. Data from El Heraldo de Chiapas is not incorporated into ACLED’s Mexico dataset prior to October 2024. Therefore, users conducting analysis across this period should account for a structural increase in events in Chiapas, associated with the addition of this source.
