Ukraine Conflict Update: 29 June – 5 July 2024

Situation Summary

In the Donetsk region, Russian forces continued advancing west of Donetsk city, reportedly seizing several villages northwest of Avdiivka. Russian forces also made territorial gains west of Horlivka. In northern Kharkiv region, west of the previously occupied area near Vovchansk, Russian forces invaded and possibly occupied Sotnytskyi Kozachok. Further south in the region, Russian forces continued pushing towards Kupiansk, reportedly seizing another village on the way. Russian forces also advanced in the Luhansk region, close to the administrative boundaries with the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, west and southwest of Svatove.

Russian shelling, missiles, and drones killed at least 50 civilians in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa, Poltava, and Zaporizhia regions. On 29 June, Russian missiles hit Vilniansk in the Zaporizhia region, killing seven civilians, including three children, and injuring almost 40 others, including nine children. On 3 July, Russian drones and missiles hit a mall in Dnipro city, the Dnipropetrovsk region, killing eight civilians and wounding around 50 others. On 5 July, Russian forces dropped aerial bombs on Selydove in the Donetsk region, killing five civilians and wounding 14 others. 

Separately, Russian forces continued the unlawful transfer of Ukrainian children from the occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia. Last week, they deported around 400 children from Mariupol in the Donetsk region and 138 children from the Luhansk region, under the guise of attending training camps and festivals.¹
