- Russian forces also advanced in the border areas of the Kharkiv region and in the western part of the Zaporizhia region. They occupied one settlement in each region.
- ACLED records at least 57 Russian long-range missile and drone strikes, including in the western regions of Volyn, Lviv, and Chernivtsi, as well as in Kyiv city and the surrounding region.
- Russian shelling, aerial bombs, and drones killed at least 53 civilians in the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, and Chernivtsi regions. Meanwhile, Ukrainian shelling and drones reportedly injured at least 19 civilians in the occupied parts of the Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhia regions.
Spotlight: Russian strikes kill civilians in the Chernivtsi region for the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion
On 12 July, Russian forces targeted the western regions of Lviv and Chernivtsi with Shahed-type drones and air-launched missiles, damaging multiple residential and other buildings. The drone strikes on Lviv city and the eponymous region injured 13 civilians, while the strike on the city of Chernivtsi killed two civilians and injured 26 others in one of its residential areas. In addition, debris from Russian drones and missiles damaged houses and cars in the nearby Storozhynetska community.
The deadly strike on Chernivtsi was the first recorded Russian strike that directly targeted civilians in the small western region, which, prior to this, was spared from Russian bombing since the start of the full-scale invasion. The targeting of Chernivtsi amid weakened air defense and increased Russian targeting of Ukraine’s hinterlands could undermine the region’s status as a safe refuge for internally displaced Ukrainians and as an international humanitarian logistics hub.
