Key trends
- Russian forces continued small-scale incursions across the border in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, capturing a settlement on the international border in the former. In the Donetsk region, Russian forces advanced around Kostiantynivka and near Lyman.
- Russian forces launched at least 64 long-range missile and drone attacks, including on Kyiv city and region, as well as on the western regions of Rivne and Khmelnytskyi.
- Russian strikes killed at least 82 civilians in the Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Donetsk, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporizhia, Chernihiv, and Mykolaiv regions. Ukrainian strikes reportedly killed 25 civilians in the Russian-controlled parts of the Donetsk, Crimea, Kherson, Zaporizhia, Luhansk, and Kharkiv regions.
Spotlight: A Ukrainian naval drone detonates in a Romanian port
On 5 June, a Ukrainian uncrewed surface vessel detonated inside the Romanian port of Constanta, after reportedly drifting due to Russian electronic interference. This incident marks the appearance of a new type of risk to maritime security in the wider Black Sea region.
The vessel’s scheduled detonation, which was either because of a deadline or remotely triggered, caused no casualties and damage was limited to civilian port infrastructure. Two other naval drones also exploded approximately 90 miles off the Romanian coast. Local authorities also said another similar drone detonated in Ukraine’s exclusive economic zone. The report of a fifth drone with an unknown location prompted Romanian authorities to issue an alert along the entire coast about the possibly loaded and drifting vessel. The fear of explosion was compounded by the recent discovery of a naval mine between 2 Mai and Vama Veche beach resorts on 3 June, amid the general uneasiness in Romanian public opinion over the country’s preparedness for drone interception.
Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey have had to deal with the discovery and defusal of multiple naval mines in the Black Sea since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It even led to them formalizing a mine clearance cooperation within NATO. The novel danger posed by drifting naval drones loaded with explosives and aimed at Russia’s shadow fleet and Black Sea Fleet added a new risk layer for maritime navigation in the sea and a new challenge for coastal states. Additionally, as seen in the event of defusal of a reportedly Ukrainian naval drone in Western Greece, however accidental, there are signs that drifting naval drones posing threats to civilian navigation and tourism are straining relations with regional partners in Turkey, Romania, and Greece. These governments have already expressed concerns and condemnation about the geographical expansion of Ukraine’s drone hunt on Russian naval assets. Pressured by domestic concerns over security and economy, the military and political support for Ukraine from these countries will be further affected, if such maritime security incidents continue to arise.
