Mombasa Republican Council has declared the coast an independent republic and called for a boycott of next week’s presidential election. The group has also been accused of scare tactics and violence on the coast, in the period leading up to the elections.
The boycott has important implications for Odinga, who is believed to have support from the Coastal region. Given the neck in neck race with Kenyatta, limited voting there will be positive for Kenyatta’s Jubilee coalition.
Concessions by Odinga will need to include a serious negotiation with Coastal elites, stopping short of supporting secession.
