Situation Summary
Russian forces continued attempts to encircle Avdiivka in the Donetsk region by trying to enter Stepove settlement to the northwest of Avdiivka throughout the week. Fighting also continued near Bakhmut and in the western part of the Donetsk region. In the Zaporizhia region, clashes continued along the frontline, with Ukrainian forces making gains near Verbove, southeast of Orikhiv, and Russian forces slightly advancing southwest of Huliaipole. In the Kherson region, fighting took place east of Oleshky on the occupied southern bank of the Dnipro river. Russian shelling, missiles, and drone strikes reportedly killed around 20 civilians in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa, Poltava, and Sumy regions. Increased Russian shelling of Kherson city killed three and wounded at least 12 civilians last week. On 4 November, Russian missiles hit the Myrhorod district of the central Poltava region, killing one civilian and injuring five others. In Russian-occupied areas, Ukrainian military intelligence and local resistance movements killed a senior retired commander in a car explosion in the occupied Luhansk city and blew up a police officer’s car in Mariupol in the Donetsk region.
Meanwhile, both sides continued attempts to deny each other’s capabilities on the Black Sea. Russian forces increased missile and drone attacks on port infrastructure and the historical city center of Odesa, injuring over a dozen civilians throughout the week. On 8 November, a Russian missile hit a Liberia-flagged ship entering the port of Odesa, killing a Ukrainian harbor pilot and wounding a port worker and three Filipino crew on board. Meanwhile, in Crimea, Ukrainian naval drones and long-range missiles hit a brand-new Russian missile carrier in a shipyard in Kerch and sank two landing ships near the peninsula’s northwestern shore.
