Situation Summary
Russian forces claimed to have captured Krokhmalne village in the Kharkiv region, about 30 kilometers southeast of Kupiansk. In the Donetsk region, fighting continued near Bakhmut, around Avdiivka, and east of Lyman. Due to the fighting, the Ukrainian government announced the evacuation of civilians from the Marinka and Ocheretyne territorial communities in the Donetsk region. Clashes continued in the Zaporizhia region, where Ukrainian forces made gains southwest of Orikhiv.
Russian shelling and airstrikes killed over 25 civilians in the Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions, as well as the government-controlled part of the Donetsk region. On 23 January, Russian missiles hit residential buildings in Kharkiv city, killing 11 civilians and wounding over 70 others. The debris of intercepted missiles wounded 22 civilians in Kyiv on the same day. Russian shelling of Hirnyk in the Donetsk region killed two civilians and wounded nine others.
In Russian-controlled Donetsk city, 28 civilians were killed and at least 30 others wounded in the shelling of a market in the western part of the city on 21 January. Russia accuses Ukraine of carrying out the attack, which it denies.
