Situation Summary
In the Donetsk region, Russian forces continued to make slow advances west and northwest of Donetsk city. Amid this offensive, on 10 May, Russian forces crossed the border from the Russian Belgorod region and seized several mostly undefended border settlements north and northeast of Kharkiv city. This operation was likely launched to reduce Ukrainian shelling of the Belgorod region and pull Ukrainian forces from other areas of Russian offensive operations in eastern Ukraine, following the resumed supply of US military aid. Earlier in the week, Russian forces seized Kotliarivka and Kyslivka villages on the road towards Kupiansk. In the Luhansk region, Russian forces reportedly advanced west of Svatove. On the occupied southern bank of the Kherson region, fighting reportedly spread east from Krynky to Kozachi Laheri and the area of Oleshky.
Ukrainian forces continued to conduct long-range strikes on occupied regions, hitting Russian positions, military equipment, and infrastructure in the Kherson, Kharkiv, and Luhansk regions. On 6 May, a Ukrainian naval drone destroyed a Russian ‘Mangust’ speedboat off the western coast of Crimea.
Russian shelling and airstrikes killed over a dozen civilians in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Sumy regions. Russian air, drone, and missile strikes on Kharkiv city throughout the week wounded at least 27 civilians. Russian forces also continued targeting critical infrastructure, attacking thermal power plants, generators, and transmitters in the Donetsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kirovohrad, Lviv, Poltava, Sumy, Vinnytsia, and Zaporizhia regions.
