Key trends
- In the Donetsk region, Russian troops occupied one village east of Kurakhove.
- Russian forces continued advancing within and near Toretsk in the Donetsk region, towards Kupiansk and the Oskil river in the Kharkiv region and near Makiivka in the Luhansk region.
- ACLED records 14 Russian long-range missile and drone strikes, targeting Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Cherkasy, Kirovograd, and Kyiv regions, and the western region of Lviv. Ukrainian forces also intercepted strikes in at least 40 instances, including over the western regions of Khmelnytskyi, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Rivne.
- Russian shelling, missiles, and drones killed at least 35 civilians across Ukraine. In addition, Ukrainian drone strikes and shelling killed three civilians in the Russia-occupied Horlivka of the Donetsk region.

Spotlight: Ukrainians strike munitions warehouse in Tver region
On 18 September, a large number of Ukrainian drones attacked a Russian military warehouse in Toropets in Tver region, triggering the detonation of multiple missiles, allegedly including ballistic and anti-aircraft missiles, glide bombs, and other weapons. The magnitude of the blasts was comparable to an earthquake1Lidia Kelly et al., ‘Ukrainian drone attack triggers earthquake-sized blast at arsenal in Russia’s Tver region,’ Reuters, 18 September 2024 and led to the evacuation of around 3,000 civilians from the area, of whom 17 were injured. The number of likely military casualties is unknown. Previous notable Ukrainian strikes on ammunition storage sites on Russia’s internationally recognized territory occurred in August in Rostov and Voronezh regions.
