ACLED’s January figures show cattle rustling and pastoralist violence increases in Uganda
Commenting on rising cattle rustling and pastoralist violence in Uganda, Ladd Serwat, ACLED’s Senior Africa Analyst, said:
“Violence involving pastoralist groups in Uganda increased dramatically in January — rising to their highest level since April 2023. In one of the incidents, security forces intervened after suspected Karamojong militia stole 500 cattle from ethnic Pokot pastoralists. Jie pastoralists were involved in other skirmishes. Prior to this escalation, police claimed to have taken 1,275 small arms out of circulation in northeast Uganda and ACLED data shows a corresponding decline in violence involving pastoralists until this recent uptick in January.”
