In May 2023, deadly ethnic violence erupted in India’s Manipur state, as the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities clashed over the former’s demand for tribal status and the affirmative action policies that come with it. Two years later, an uneasy truce persists amid periodic flares of violence. The two communities live in near-complete segregation.
