Key trends
- In the Donetsk region, Russian forces made territorial gains in the area of Komar, Pokrovsk, and east of Myrnohrad, occupying at least five settlements. Russian forces also advanced near Bilohorivka on the Donetsk-Luhansk administrative boundary.
- Russian forces seized one settlement in the Sumy region and advanced north of Dvorichna in the Kharkiv region.

Spotlight: Russian forces push fighting into the Dnipropetrovsk region
After a brief and deadly incursion into the Dnipropetrovsk region with a small group of troops in May,1Yevheniia Martyniuk, “Russians said they crossed into Dnipropetrovsk. Ukraine says those troops are dead,” Euromaidan Press, 21 May 2025 Russian forces re-engaged Ukrainian troops in direct armed clashes in the eastern part of the region last week.
Though they denied that Russian troops crossed into the region,2Oleh Chernysh, “Russian troops enter the Dnipropetrovsk region? Is it so and what the Armed Forces say,” BBC in Ukrainian, 10 June 2025 (Ukrainian) Ukraine’s military and political leadership have acknowledged3Kateryna Denisova, “Russia ramps up its summer offensive in several directions, Ukraine’s military says,” The Kyiv Independent, 16 June 2025 that Russia is pushing in the direction of Novopavlivka. This push, along with advances in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions, aims to stretch Ukrainian forces thin. Russia also likely intends to distract Ukrainian forces from its summer offensive on the town of Kostiantynivka in the central part of the Donetsk region. The approaching frontline translated into a three-times increase in the targeting of civilians and infrastructure in the Synelnykivskyi district of the Dnipropetrovsk region, turning it into an inhabitable area for the large number of Ukrainians displaced4Ukrinform, “Shelter, evacuation, and housing for IDPs: PM Shmyhal held meeting in Dnipropetrovsk region”, 12 June 2025 from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and an unsafe transit route for Ukrainian army logistics. Combined with the constant targeting of the Nikopolskyi district by Russian strikes from across the Dnieper river, the crawling frontline adds a new challenge for the less defense-ready and industry-heavy central region.
