This update improves the accuracy of the locations recorded for Hezbollah strikes against IDF military sites at the Lebanese border.
Impacted data: All events with geoprecision 2 on the Lebanese side of the border involving mention of [IDF] military sites being hit by Hezbollah.
Publication date: The data improvements were published on 2 September 2024.
Summary of changes:
Hezbollah strikes targeting the locations of IDF military sites along the border with Lebanon, previously coded to the nearest Lebanese town with geoprecision 2 to denote the imprecision, are now coded to the specific IDF military site with geoprecision 1.
In most cases, the IDF military sites do not have publicly available designations. Instead, the site names mentioned in claims by Hezbollah are used. For example, an unnamed IDF post along the border with Lebanon near Kfar Chouba is referred to and recorded as ‘Rwayset al Alam’ in the Location column. Other names of recorded sites are: Radar Post, Al Samaka, Al Ramtha, Ruwaisat Al-Qarn and Zebdin.
In total, 110 events had their location improved.
Why are we changing this:
The reporting on strikes by Hezbollah against IDF military sites along the border with Lebanon contained vague language around the exact sites that were hit. Initially, the locations of these sites were coded to the nearest known populated place with geoprecision 2, in line with ACLED’s general methodology. In some cases, this resulted in the location of Hezbollah strikes being coded to Lebanese towns, for example Chebaa in Al Nabatieh governorate. In order to provide a more accurate picture of the interactions along the border, deeper research was conducted to identify the exact locations of these IDF military sites.
Around the Lebanese towns of Chebaa and Kfar Chouba, the newly recorded location lies in an area that is disputed between Israel, Lebanon and Syria. The locations there are recorded as being inside Syria, Quneitra governorate. In line with ACLED’s general methodology, the coding of this country does not indicate confirmation of an international legal status or disputes de-facto control of another government over that area.
Users aiming to analyze all interactions between IDF and Hezbollah along the Lebanese border will need to download the datasets for Israel, Lebanon and Syria to capture all relevant events.
