On 11 March 2025, ACLED expanded its coverage of the Philippines with the integration of two new sources, Minda News and Northern Dispatch, from 1 January 2018 through the present.
This update is part of an initiative to address gaps in coverage of political violence in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindano (BARMM), with a focus on improving coverage to capture trends related to Muslim separatist groups, Islamist rebel activity, rido-related violence, and broader conflict dynamics in the region.
Key Changes
Correction Period and Scope
The data span from 1 January 2018 to present. These new sources will continue to be covered in weekly realtime data publications.
Publication date
The data were published on 11 March 2025.
Summary of changes
As a result of this project, more than 200 events and at least 70 fatalities were added to the dataset. Additionally, nearly 90 existing events were updated or corrected based on new information from these sources.
The newly integrated data from these sources resulted in an increase in ‘Battles’ and ‘Violence against civilians’ events in 2018, following previous spikes corresponding with key national and regional developments, including President Duterte’s 2016 election, the 2017 Marawi siege by IS-inspired militants, and the imposition of martial law across Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.
