On 2 April 2025, ACLED published new data from new sources Activatica, ITAR-TASS, Kommersant, Argumenty I Fakty, and Charter-97 to improve coverage of conflict events in Ukraine’s eastern and southern regions bordering or occupied by Russian forces. The new data added covers the period from 7 August 2024 to present, and these sources are now covered as part of ACLED’s weekly real-time data updates.
Over 1,110 newly coded events were added to the Ukraine dataset, focused particularly on coverage of Crimea, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhia. Kherson and Zaporizhia accounted for 77% of all new events added. The project included new Explosions/remote violence events, which comprised 89% of the total of new events added. Additionally, 194 new fatalities were added to the dataset. While this represents less than 0.5% of the total fatalities already recorded by ACLED in the dataset, there was a significant impact on civilian fatalities caused by Ukrainian forces, which increased by 89% across the six regions covered by the new sources.
