United States: Far-right militia and white supremacist groups
Far-right, militant social movement, and white supremacist activity decreased moderately from November to December. In Arizona, the Verde Valley Preparedness Team and the Chino Valley Preparedness Team continued to hold recruitment meetings. Meanwhile, a gun store owned by the leader of Faith, Education, Commerce — an anti-government group with a militia wing — hosted a demonstration against the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to remove former President Donald Trump from the upcoming primary ballot in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Openly white supremacist activity slightly decreased in December compared to November. White Lives Matter affiliates held demonstrations on highway overpasses and dropped white supremacist and anti-immigrant banners in Colorado, Minnesota, Washington, and Missouri. In Austin, Texas, they were joined in a demonstration against immigration by two neo-Nazi ‘active clubs’ (loosely affiliated with the Rise Above Movement), the Alamo Active Club, and Parker County Active Club. In California, the Clockwork Crew, also affiliated with the Rise Above Movement, distributed antisemitic fliers, marking the second recorded instance of the group’s activity in the state. Finally, Patriot Front’s activity continued at a consistent rate in December, as the group held training events in seven states, dropped banners in 15, and demonstrated against immigration in Utah and Washington.
United States and Canada: Demonstrations over prison conditions spike on New Year’s Eve
Demonstrations demanding better treatment for inmates spiked in December in both the US and Canada. This increase in prison-related demonstrations came largely as a result of New Year’s Eve ‘noise demonstrations,’ which aim to help connect inmates to the outside world by reaching their cells with the sounds of banging pots, fireworks, musical instruments, and chanting. These demonstrations have been coordinated globally for several years. The noise demonstrations took place in at least 13 states and two provinces.
