Nearly 70 Palestinians in the West Bank were killed last month as ACLED records a 14% increase in violent incidents involving the IDF in January compared to the month prior.
Ameneh Mehvar, Middle East Senior Analyst with ACLED (Armed Conflict Location & Event Data) said:
“At least 44 of the nearly 70 Palestinians killed in the West Bank in January were killed during Israel’s Iron Wall operation in Jenin, Tulkarm, and Tubas, which targeted Palestinian armed groups in the north. In parallel, the IDF established dozens of new checkpoints across the West Bank. While fears of rising tensions following the release of key Palestinian prisoners may have played a role in Israel’s increased security measures, the timing — coming shortly after the Gaza ceasefire deal — suggests these actions may also be politically motivated, given their implications for the survival of the Israeli ruling coalition.”
